![]() ![]() I'll split the difference and say both sides have a point: OK, Oloro is bad game design. Yes there are less answers to Oloro, (kiling/tucking/darksteel mutating him away are all unavailable against Oloro) however in return for that his effect is smaller. I don't see why playing Sulphuric Vortex to negate Oloro is too different to playing leyline of the void to negate a reanimator commander. I argue that you can (in fact he argues it too) play answers to Oloro. I argue it isn't for nothing, when playing him you are actively missing out on a higher presence commander. the fact that Oloro is neither dominating nor dominated means that the power level he presents means this isn't a simple question in design terms and he's presented some interesting options.Īs I see it he argues two points, and I disagree with both I was saying that the fact that he asks the question ("Is it worth playing Oloro in the command zone for two life a turn, when i could be playing a commander on the board with a bigger presence") that means there is a cost to playing him. He argues Oloro gets something for nothing, but that isn't true. By providing power to a particular player without asking for anything meaningful in return, a game designer is essentially bending the game rules to give someone an advantage outside the context of player agency.īut it's wrong, there is a cost to playing command zone only Oloro, and that is you miss out on other powerful effects, whether that's beating down with a commander, recycling artifacts with Sharuum, or stealing peoples hands with Sen's triplets, these are all things you aren't doing, in return for your dependable life gain. Why is giving players something good without asking them to pay a cost or perform a game action to get it a bad thing? Multiplayer games are generally at their best when all the players are treated as equals by the game rules and the outcome is measured based on all the choices the players are making over the course of the game. The answer to that is irrelevant, uncertain and decided in games, I don't think many are complaining about the actual power level of Oloro. ![]() Is it worth forgoing having a functional (vulnerable) commander, in return for two life a turn (relatively safely). Life gain isn't great in general, possibly more so in a format where you can just count to 21. To play Oloro and just sit back on him in the command zone all game, means you are missing out on having a commander that affects the board. Most are more significant than 2 life a turn. ![]() Commanders have an effect, they have a reason to play them. But there's loads that could be attempted, a Bob effect springs to mind, with great power but at great risk and no way of removing it if it gets out hand could be another flavour of this. That's fine design space to play with, maybe Oloro isn't the most refined attempt at it. Oloro, has a small effect but it's one that is quite hard to hose. Hosing the effect is one way of dealing with them. Mindlock orb hoses Zur, or loads of other commender effects.Ĭommanders often have big effects. Leyline of the void hoses the stink out of my Glissa the traitor deck (and similarly to Oloro, does so from turn one for no investment). How is this different to other commander hosers. In response to his "un-interactive" point he names the responses in the article, but dismisses them as "un-fun". Whether that's balanced is a separate debate, but in order to sit back on an uncasted commander you forgo the commander damage kill, or any other benefit you get from the board presence of a commander. There is a cost to using Oloro, even if he's never cast, the opportunity cost of not having a different commander. I disagree with his "something for nothing" point. r/magicTCG is not produced, endorsed, supported by, or affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
